Cookie Policy
Effective from 1 January 2026 · Last updated 7 October 2026
This page explains the cookies and similar technologies used by the Smart Menu website and digital menu, and how to manage them. For data processing in general, see the Privacy Policy.
1. What cookies are
Cookies are small text files stored on the user’s device by the websites they visit. Similar technologies (e.g. localStorage) let information be stored directly in the browser. They can be first-party (set by us) or third-party (set by external providers).
2. Categories we use
- Strictly necessary cookies: required for the Service to work (e.g. keeping you signed in, processing payments, remembering your cookie choices). No consent required.
- Preference cookies: store choices you make explicitly (e.g. the interface or menu language, the restaurant last opened in the dashboard) to improve your experience. Set only after your action.
- Analytics and marketing cookies: currently not used. If introduced, they will be set only with your prior consent.
3. Your choices
On your first visit a banner lets you accept or reject non-essential cookies, or open Preferences to choose by category. You can change your decision at any time:
Your choice is stored in the smartmenu_consent cookie for 6 months. You can also block or delete cookies through your browser settings; disabling strictly necessary cookies may prevent access to the dashboard or completing payments.
4. Cookies used
| Name | Provider | Purpose | Duration | Category |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| sb-<project>-auth-token | Menew (Supabase) | Keeps the user signed in to the dashboard | Session / up to 1 year | Strictly necessary |
| smartmenu_consent | Menew | Stores your cookie preferences | 6 months | Strictly necessary |
| SITE_LOCALE | Menew | Remembers the language chosen for the site and dashboard interface | 1 year | Preferences |
| NEXT_LOCALE | Menew | Remembers the language a diner chose for a restaurant’s digital menu (set separately for each restaurant’s menu) | 1 year | Preferences |
| sm_last_restaurant | Menew | Remembers which restaurant was last opened in the dashboard, for users who manage more than one | 6 months | Preferences |
| __stripe_mid / __stripe_sid | Stripe | Fraud prevention during payment (set only on the Stripe checkout pages) | 1 year / 30 minutes | Strictly necessary |
5. Data stored in the browser (localStorage and sessionStorage)
On the digital menu, some information is stored only on the diner’s device and is not sent to our servers. The one exception is the optional shared table: when a diner joins one, the name they typed and their chosen dishes are also sent to our servers so the others at the table can see them (see the Privacy Policy).
| Item | Where / how long | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| smart_menu_favorites | localStorage | The dishes a diner marks as favourite. Kept only on the device, unless the diner joins a shared table (see below); cleared 1 hour after joining a shared table. |
| smart_menu_username | localStorage | The name the diner typed for a shared table, so they do not have to retype it next time |
| smart_menu_roomcode / smart_menu_room_time | localStorage (cleared after 1 hour) | The shared-table code and when the diner joined, so a page reload keeps them at the same table |
| sm_review_nudge_<restaurant> | sessionStorage (until the tab is closed) | Remembers that the review invitation was already shown, so it is not repeated |
| menow_logo_intro_seen | sessionStorage (until the tab is closed) | Shows the restaurant’s logo animation only once per visit |
Anonymous usage statistics on the digital menu (e.g. menu and dish views) do not use cookies or any identifier stored on the device.
6. Third-party cookies
During payment, the user is redirected to Stripe, which sets its own technical and anti-fraud cookies. That processing is governed by the Stripe Privacy Policy. If you sign in with “Continue with Google”, Google sets its own cookies during the sign-in redirect, governed by Google’s privacy policy. The Telegram assistant, if enabled, operates inside the Telegram app under Telegram’s terms.
7. Updates
If analytics or marketing tools are introduced in the future, the consent banner will request prior opt-in for those categories and this page will be updated accordingly.
